It took 13 innings for the Seattle Mariners to beat the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

The score, 1-0, reflects just how dominant both pitching staffs were.

It was an instant classic.

Gerrit Cole took the ball for the Yankees and hurled seven scoreless innings, with four hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts.

It was a perfect start and more than enough to lift the Yankees, but Luis Castillo had other plans.

The right-hander, acquired via trade from the Cincinnati Reds, blanked the Yanks for eight frames in which he only conceded three hits and two bases on balls, striking out seven.

That’s why the Mariners gave up three of their top five prospects: to get a bonafide ace like Castillo in return.

Both bullpens were masterful, but the Yankees helped the M’s with some lousy baserunning in extra-innings.

The Mariners Got A Hard-Fought Win

The stage was set for a Mariners walk-off win, and they didn’t disappoint.

With the bases loaded and facing tough righty Jonathan Loaisiga, Luis Torrens roped a single to right field that ended the game.

Teammates rushed to the infield to celebrate the hard-earned victory.

With Castillo leading the way in the rotation, Seattle looks set to make the postseason for the first time since 2001.

It’s one of the longest playoffs droughts in recent memory.

At 60-52, they are well-positioned to cement a spot in October baseball, but they will need to keep winning games to fend off competitors from other divisions looking to earn a place via the Wild Card.

In their recent matchups against the Yankees, they have proven they have what it takes to beat elite teams.

They did it yesterday, and without their best player, Julio Rodriguez.
