The Mariners Offense Has Fallen To Shocking Depths

At 29-39, it’s hard to think about a more disappointing team in MLB than the Seattle Mariners.

After reaching last year’s final weekend with a possible postseason spot and finishing with a 90-72 record, everybody expected the 2022 Mariners to put it all together.

But they have been abysmal according to expectations, and they currently have a mediocre -19 run differential.

A big reason why they have struggled so much this year is their abysmal offense.

The Seattle #Mariners lose again to the #Angels, 4-0, and fall to 29-39. Here’s their run total in their past 13 losses: 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 0, 2, 0, 1, 2, 0, 0. Yes, a total of 15 runs, scoring more than two runs just once in those defeats,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeted on Sunday.

An Anemic, Disappointing Offense

The 2022 Mariners rank 26th out of 30 teams in total runs scored, with 264.

They are 15th in home runs (69), but 20th in OPS with a mediocre .689.

Part of the problem is that some of the existing 2021 talent hasn’t developed as planned, and some of the offseason acquisitions have also underperformed and failed miserably.

This offense was supposed to have five above-average outfielders by May or June: Julio Rodriguez, Jarred Kelenic, Mitch Haniger, Kyle Lewis, and Jesse Winker.

Winker is slugging .299, Kelenic is in the minor leagues, and Haniger is injured.

Lewis has just 16 plate appearances with knee issues, and only Rodriguez (.265/.326/.419, eight homers, 18 steals) has responded.

Ty France has been the star of the team, while JP Crawford and Eugenio Suarez have played well.

Besides those players, very few hitters have been consistently productive.

Will the Mariners be able to overcome their anemic offense? They may be running out of time, even if there are still several months left to play.

Key contributors need to wake up soon if this team is going to have a chance.
