While Citi PremierMiles lets its users earn air miles every time they use the card, HDFC Regalia offers reward points which can be converted to air miles or utilized for booking tickets via the HDFC SmartBuy Platform. The rate of earning these reward points/miles and the method of redeeming the earned points are different. This should be the main criteria of choosing between these cards.
Earning Reward Points/Miles
HDFC Regalia credit card offers 4 reward points per Rs. 150 spent and does not provide any category-based acceleration on these points. On the other hand, Citi PremierMiles offers 4 Miles per Rs. 100 spent and 10 Miles per Rs. 100 on airline transactions and on Citi PremierMiles website.
Let us take an example to see how many points you will earn on each card:
|Transactions||Amount||HDFC Regalia||Citi PremierMiles|
|Air Tickets*||Rs. 12,000||320||1,200**|
*Booked via Airline’s website
**Accelerated earning on air ticket booking
As you can see, the earnings on PremierMiles credit card are higher. Moreover, the Miles earned on PremierMiles Card never expire whereas HDFC Regalia reward points are valid for 2 years only.
Now, let’s come to the redemption of earned points/miles.
Reward Points/Miles Redemption
With Citi PremierMiles, you have the option of transferring the miles to airline frequent flyer program or hotel loyalty program with select airlines and hotels. You can also redeem the miles to make purchases or travel bookings via other partner outlets using the points. In this case, you will have to use your Citi PremierMiles Card to book the ticket and you will get a redemption link on your registered mobile number. You can choose the number of points to redeem for the said transaction.
HDFC Regalia Credit Card allows you to use the earned reward points to make travel booking via HDFC SmartBuy Platform. You can also convert the points into air miles through net banking. In both the cases, the value of one reward point will be Rs. 0.5.
Let’s say you have 20,000 reward points in your HDFC Regalia Credit Card or 20,000 Miles in your Citi PremierMiles Card. This is how much it will be worth (as per your choice of redemption).
|Redemption Method||HDFC Regalia||Citi PremierMiles|
|Transfer to Air Miles/Airline Frequent Flyer Program||10,000 Miles||10,000 Miles|
|Used for booking tickets (via SmartBuy or PremierMiles)||Rs. 10,000||Rs. 10,000|
|Used for Travel Booking with other Travel Partners||NA||Rs. 9,000|
Note: Both the cards allow other ways of reward/miles redemption as well, including merchandise and vouchers from the rewards catalogue, utility bill payment, etc.
|Which card is better for travel benefits?
Considering the rate of rewards and possible ways of redemption, Citi PremierMiles turns out to be a better card than HDFC Regalia. Third-party platforms like MakeMyTrip, EaseMyTrip, Cleartrip, Goibibo, etc. usually offer better deals than airline websites or bank-sponsored websites. This is the main reason why Citi PremierMiles is better. Even if you book via a portal like MMT, you can pay with your accumulated miles. However, if you wish to utilize HDFC Regalia reward points for travel benefits, you can only do so by converting them to air miles or using the SmartBuy platform.
