Another day goes by with fans of the St. Louis Cardinals becoming increasingly frustrated that the front office has to this point, failed to address the team’s obvious need for starting pitching.

With Adam Wainwright retiring and Jordan Montgomery, Miles Mikolas, and Jack Flaherty set to enter free agency at the end of the season, only Steven Matz is under contract for 2024 and 2025.

There also are plenty of question marks regarding the current state of the rotation, most notably with Matz and Flaherty, both of whom are coming off of injury-plagued seasons.

On Twitter, a Cardinals fan responded to another fan who suggested that it’s time to go get some pitching, and made a grim prediction for 2023.

A common theme for the Cardinals at trade deadlines in recent years has been to acquire left-handed starters that get more ground balls than they do strikeouts.

Not that this type of pitcher wouldn’t help the Cardinals, but it’s been their M.O. at recent trade deadlines.

In 2021, with an hour to spare, the team landed J.A. Happ and Jon Lester in separate deals.

Last year, they acquired Jose Quintana and Jordan Montgomery.

While each of those starters helped the Cards, what they really need is a higher-end starter.

A trade for Pablo Lopez is always possible, given that the Miami Marlins just signed Johnny Cueto to a one-year deal.

The Cardinals could also dive into the free agent market and take a chance on somebody like Mike Minor, or even former Cardinal Michael Wacha.

But fans are going to want more than that, and they will not hesitate to say as much.
